Answer Engine Optimisation
Answer engine optimisation is the discipline of being the response rather than a result. It started with featured snippets and voice search, and it matters far more now that an assistant will read one source aloud or paraphrase it without showing the alternatives. If your page is not the cleanest available answer, another business owns the moment.
- Question-level targeting, not keyword-level
- Structured data that matches the copy exactly
- Works for snippets, voice and assistants at once
Why it matters now
The answer is read out, not clicked on.
When a device reads a single answer aloud there is no second place to glance at. The same is true of a snippet at the top of a results page, or a one-line reply from an assistant. The format forces a winner.
What wins is rarely the longest page. It is the page that states the answer plainly, early, in a structure a machine can parse without interpreting, and then backs it up well enough to be trusted.
Most sites bury the answer three paragraphs into a page written to sell. AEO is largely the discipline of putting it at the top and letting the selling follow.
The principle
If the answer is not in the first sentence, it is not your answer.
Write for extraction, then for persuasion.
An engine reading your page is looking for a passage it can present on its own. If the first readable thing after the heading is a paragraph about your passion for customer service, there is nothing to extract and the page gets passed over.
Put the answer first and the whole page improves. The reader who already wanted you gets their question resolved immediately, and the one who was comparing you sees that you answer directly instead of circling.
Then persuade underneath, at whatever length the decision deserves. The two goals conflict far less often than people assume.
What this includes
The AEO work, concretely.
Question mapping
We pull the real questions from search data, your enquiry inbox and the assistants themselves, then decide which deserve a page, a section or a single line.
Answer-first rewriting
Every target question gets a direct answer in the first few lines, written so it can be lifted whole and still make sense on its own.
Heading architecture
Headings that read as questions and sections that resolve them, so an engine can match a passage to a query without guessing.
Structured data
FAQPage, HowTo, Service, Product and Organisation markup, kept honest and consistent with the visible page.
Snippet and voice testing
We check what is actually returned for your questions on desktop, mobile and voice, then fix the pages that lose.
Internal linking
Question pages linked into the service pages they support, so an answer leads somewhere commercial rather than ending.
Scope
What the service can include.
Every engagement is scoped to what the site actually needs. Nothing on this list is billed because it appears on a list.
- Buyer question inventory and prioritisation
- Answer-first rewriting of target pages
- Question-led heading architecture
- FAQPage, HowTo and Service schema
- Featured snippet and voice result testing
- Internal linking from answers to services
- People also ask coverage expansion
- Monthly snippet and assistant monitoring
Straight answers
Common AEO mistakes.
ClaimedFAQ schema is a ranking trick.
ActuallyIt is a description of your page. Used honestly it helps a machine find the answer. Used to dress up a thin page it gets ignored, or worse.
ClaimedShort pages win snippets.
ActuallyShort answers win snippets. The page around the answer can and often should be thorough, because depth is part of why the answer is trusted.
ClaimedEvery question deserves its own page.
ActuallyMost belong as a section of a page that already owns the topic. Splitting them out dilutes the page that was winning.
ClaimedAEO is only for informational queries.
ActuallyThe highest value answers are commercial: what it costs, how long it takes, who is good at this in my city. Those are the ones worth owning.
How we work
From first audit to measured result
- 01
Question inventory
Build the list, grouped by where each question sits in the buying decision. This is the asset the rest of the work runs on.
- 02
Audit
For each question, record what is returned now and why. Often the answer already exists on your site in the wrong shape.
- 03
Rewrite and mark up
Answer-first copy with matching schema. The fastest moving part of AEO.
- 04
Expand
Fill the gaps with new pages, prioritised by commercial value rather than volume.
- 05
Monitor
Snippet and assistant positions are volatile. We re-check monthly and fix the losses.
What better performance looks like
The outcome we are actually working toward.
When a question is answered directly on your page, you win the snippet, the voice answer and the assistant reply from the same piece of work, and the page reads better for the human too.
Plain english
The words, defined.
- Answer engine
- Any system that returns a direct answer instead of a list: featured snippets, voice assistants, AI chat tools and the answer boxes on a results page.
- Featured snippet
- The answer Google lifts to the top of a results page, drawn from a passage it judged to resolve the query.
- Passage extraction
- The process of selecting a self-contained section of a page as the answer. Writing for it means every section has to stand alone.
- People also ask
- The expandable related questions on a results page, and a reliable map of what else your buyer wants to know.
- Zero click
- A search resolved without a visit to any site. Not a failure if your name is in the answer, which is rather the point.

Honest fit
We would rather tell you now than in month three.
A good fit if
- Your customers ask a lot of questions before buying
- You already have decent content that is badly structured
- You want a faster win alongside slower authority work
- You are happy to answer price and process questions publicly
Probably not if
- You would rather keep pricing and process vague
- You measure success only in sessions
- The site cannot be edited
- You want a single project with no follow-up
Questions
Answer engine optimisation, answered
What does AEO stand for?
Answer engine optimisation. It covers featured snippets, voice answers, people also ask boxes and the direct replies given by AI assistants.
Is AEO different from GEO?
Related but not identical. AEO is about being the single clean answer to a question. GEO is about being named in a longer composed answer that compares options. We usually run them together because the underlying work overlaps.
Will AEO cost us clicks?
Sometimes, on informational questions. That is a fair trade when it buys the mention at the moment of decision, and it is why we weight the work towards questions a buyer asks late rather than idle curiosity.
Do we need FAQ schema on every page?
No. Schema should describe what is genuinely on the page. Marking up questions that are not really answered is the quickest way to lose eligibility.
How quickly does this move?
Snippets and assistant answers respond faster than rankings, often inside a few weeks for questions where you already have authority. New territory takes longer.
Can you do this on our existing site?
Almost always. AEO is mostly structure, copy and markup. If the site is technically broken we fix that first, and the free website audit will tell you either way.
